Save the Date: Our Anniversary Party

We had such a wonderful time at our party last year, we're going even bigger this time around. I've been working behind the scenes on the postcard, press release, and planning process. The whole team has been making special inventory for the shindig.

While those marketing projects are still in the works, I want to give you the heads up now about the event:

The big night is Saturday, November 8th from 5-9 pm

I'll be posting more information here on the blog. Or sign up for our newsletter to the right and you'll get the whole fall event schedule in a newsletter later this week.

French Lockets

Recently a customer drove down from Bellingham in search of a special locket. When she visited our shop, she bought this romantic French necklace to give to her sister.

I whipped up a little cornflower blue microsuede carrying pouch. Our customer filled the necklace with pictures of two beloved relatives, and voila -- something blue for the bride to carry in her purse on the special day.

Lockets make magical personalized gifts. This version was crafted in France from vintage molds. We carry this style in the pictured antique silver version, and a warm gold tone as well.

French Ribbon

While visiting Paris last year, our customer purchased a yard of this charming embroidered linen ribbon.

She brought it to us and custom designed an espresso brown Lola Clutch and a Sunflower zipper coin purse. Both are lined in a rich bright red moire.

Scottish Chelsea

This glossy green Chelsea is so sharp and classic.

Here's the backstory: Our customer, a nurse, learned about LBD through one of her patients. She brought us her cherished family tartan to have a custom bag made using the gorgeous wool cloth.

Photo Outside, Little Stuff Inside

You know all of the little stuff that falls to the bottom of your bag? Pens, keys, lipstick, and coins easily slip into this pouch. The Charlotte Zipper Case is one of the first small bags I made. I first sold this size (8.5" wide by 4.25" tall) about seven years ago when I was doing the Ballard Sunday Market.

Now, by customer request, I'm offering the Charlotte as a custom photo product. I took image above a few months back and thought it would be a fun picture for the outside of a Photo Charlotte sample. You might choose a picture of your dog, your sister's twins, or a snapshot from a trip to Thailand. ($36 - choices include image, microsuede, and lining color.)

My Mom's Interior Design

Children's Sculptures, originally uploaded by Laura Bee Seattle.

These sweet little clay projects are on display in a special nook in a space designed by my mom for a client. The child who made the sculptures is all grown up, but the whimsical pieces will always remain young.

Greek Revival Nook, originally uploaded by Laura Bee Seattle.

Earlier this summer I visited my mom in Rochester, NY. We dropped by several of her interior design clients' homes so that I could take pictures of the spaces she's designed. I've never taken shots like these, so this project was a learning experience.

Vintage Mirror, originally uploaded by Laura Bee Seattle.

Some of my favorite images are shots like this picture of a mirror. I like small detail photos that show the colors and style of the room, but are also quietly mysterious.

Handmade Rug, originally uploaded by Laura Bee Seattle.

My mom works with several craftspeople who have old world specialties. One of these vendors hand wove this custom rug for a Greek Revival house.

White Curtain, originally uploaded by Laura Bee Seattle.

Since I took all of the pictures using natural light, metering correctly was a real challenge for a novice like me. If I had the correct exposure for the windows, then everything else became dark. So for most of the pictures I overexposed the windows to get detail in the room.

This picture is one exception. I wanted to capture the creamy shadows of this curtain so I let the hallway fade to near black.

Button Thursday: Modern Metal

This is the most unusual rhinestone button I have ever seen. I think it may have been handmade by a metalsmith during the 1960s or 1970s.

A Ballard Adventure

Intrepid photographer Sandi Heinrich just posted a great piece about our photography adventure through Ballard, USA. One of my favorite locations was Bop Street Records, site of the shot above.

I urge you to visit her site to read her witty narration and to view lots of the great pictures she took of Susannah, Laura Bee Bags, and even a few shots of me.

Website Refresher

We have a new slide show on the front page of our website. The fresh images, like the picture above, are the results of the August collaboration between my sister (model), Sandi Heinrich (photographer), and me (stylist, location scout).

An Open Letter

Dear Sock Monkey,

Whenever I look at you, I know that you are my friend. It makes me so happy when you smile at me from your brightly colored home on my wallet.

I'm not the only one who loves you dear Monkey. Our customers can't get enough of you. They call, email, and visit us to make new monkey friends.

Why, just the other day, a Seattle woman came in to whisk some of your Monkey pals away to two girls in Serbia.

You are an international sensation Sock Monkey. I'm so glad you are my friend, right there in my purse, waiting to say 'Hello,' when I need a little cheer.

xoxoxo,
Laura Bee

Now That's a Happy Dog

Proud Pug, originally uploaded by Laura Bee Seattle.

We're still catching up from taking an extra day off this weekend. Here's a picture of Otis on Richmond Beach. He actually went right into this pose on his own without any coaxing. I think he wanted to show off his buff pecs.
